the scene of the bombing on boylston street is no longer an fbi crime scene. while hundreds turned out at memorials to remember the dead, including 23-year-old graduate student lingzi lu. >> we will keep running to finish the race for you. and we will try to realize your unfinished dreams. >> reporter: of the more than 200 people injured in the bombings, 48 are still recovering in the hospital. doctors say all are expected to survive. john and diana? >> and, devin, why didn't the fbi know about the older brother, tamerlan's return from russia? >> reporter: that's the big question. how the fbi, which interviewed tamerlan in 2011, lost track of him. what we have learned, the fbi database did not catch that trip to russia, that important trip where he reportedly became radicalized. officials here in washington say his name was misspelled on a flight manifest and fell through the cracks. they're determined to prevent that from happening again. john and diana? >> devin dwyer from washington. thank you. another person who may be able to shed some light on the plot, the older brother's widow. the fbi wants to question

katherine russell and her attorney. a meeting is being arranged. so far, she says she had no idea about her husband's deadly plot. and investigators are looking at whether tamerlan was involved in the brutal murder of three young men in 2011. one of whom was his roommate. the three young men were found with their throats slashed. authorities in canada have foiled a plot to unleash terror on hundreds of unsuspecting train passengers. two men under arrest for planning the attack were allegedly getting direction and guidance from al qaeda in iran. abc's pierre thomas has more. >> reporter: the deadly plot to derail a busy passenger train, en route from new york to toronto, murdering hundreds. >> had this plot been carried out, it would have resulted in innocent people being killed or seriously injured. >> reporter: the target, an amtrak passenger line that partners with canada's rail. thousands of people use the route from new york's penn station to toronto every year. sources tell abc news, the plan involved planting bombs to blow

up tracks and derail the trains. >> we were looking at a real threat to kill people, hurt people. >> reporter: the two arrested suspects had allegedly begun surveillance of trains in the toronto area. but authorities had been watching them since august of last year. the plot was disrupted before it became operational. here's one of the suspects in handcuffs, escorted by police. and an unexpected twist. canadian authorities claim there's a link to al qaeda and iran. it's part of al qaeda's playbook. documents obtained from osama bin laden's secret compound revealed, he had been urging followers to derail a train in the u.s. to kill passengers. so far, there's no indication that this plot is tied to boston. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. after a storm of criticism, the tsa has decided to delay a new policy that would allow small knives and sports equipment on planes. the flight attendants union, federal air marshals and top lawmakers had

denounced the change as a security issue. the tsa said it freed the agency up to concentrate on bigger risks. air travelers across the country are in for another day of flight delays, as the faa scrambles to make due with fewer air traffic controllers. some of the nation's busiest airports fell behind because federal budget cuts have resulted in furloughs across the faa. delays are ranging from 15 minutes to several hours. the record rainfall and flooding that's inundating much of the midwest is far from over. in peoria, the illinois river is cresting today, expected to hit nearly 30 feet. the problem is flood stage is only 18 feet. mississippi and other river towns are seeing similar swamping. near st. louis, more than 100 barges broke free, some smashing into bridges. at least ten of them sank. and there's evidence that we are not exaggerating about the water levels. here it is. take a look at a fish swimming by someone's office window. that's in grand rapids. the river there crested at nearly 22 feet. >> my goodness.

demand for new homes across the country, now, exceeding supply. in march, sales dropped 0.5% from february, according to the national association of realtors. sales are up more than 10% from last year. and those wanting to buy a home, up 25% because of a lack of building supplies. economists say a rise in home prices is expected. is federal reserve chairman ben bernanke hinting that he's stepping down from his post? the 59-year-old says he will not attend an annual economic conference in august attended by economic leaders. saying, there's a scheduling conflict. but he's never missed it before. his second four-year term ends in january. what happens in vegas stays in vegas. even overpriced cab fares. last year, cabbies overcharged customers 15 million bucks, going between the strip and the airport. that's according to an audit by the state legislature. the director of the taxi cab authority says they are addressing that problem. ticket prices at the movies going down, as we enter the summer blockbuster season.

lambert said she waited for an hour to be rescued after the explosion. but was never alone. >> my cousin died 20 years ago. my cousin was right there beside me, holding my hand, telling me not to let go. >> misty's a mother of five. she was racing to evacuate when the explosion hit. president obama will attend a memorial service on thursday for the 14 people who lost their lives. 12 of those victims were first responders. a fugitive who replaced osama bin laden on the fbi's most-wanted list is now under arrest. former washington, d.c. elementary schoolteacher eric justin toth was captured in nicaragua. he's accused of producing child pornography. he was fired amid allegations that he hid a camera in a boy's bathroom at the exclusive school where he taught third grade. two years after a sexting scandal cost him his job, anthony weiner is back on twitter. it was this half-naked picture that led to the downfall of the new york congressman. a link to a policy statement on new york city. former south carolina governor mark sanford not

apologizing for getting caught going out of the back door of his ex-wife's home in february. using his cell phone as a flashlight. in a newspaper ad, he addressed the accusations of trespassing. saying he entered the home because, quote, he didn't think his 14-year-old son should watch the super bowl alone. sanford is trying to re-enter politics, running for a vacant congressional seat. >> is that just getting more and more bizarre? >> that's a strange one. it was supposed to be a fun canoe trip in south florida wilderness for a son his and father. but it turned into something much worse, much more menacing, when little joey fell from the boat ramp into the shallow water. and a gator grabbed him. that's when his dad sprang into action, punching the eight-foot gator, which eventually did let go. joey escaped, if you can believe it, with only some minor cuts and bruises. >> your dad is trying to get you out. he's hitting this gator. what are you thinking? >> i'm thinking i'm going to die. >> he could have squished my son's arm like a cracker.
